Attain by V.L. Cox

Today I read a little Wallace Stevens and I tuned my bike. And look what popped up via the Starving Artist Cafe:

Attain

Lara and I went on a muddy hike down at Roxborough State Park with the intention of shooting over the ridge and heading into Waterton Canyon. It was a little too muddy for that, so we stuck to one of the wider, drier trails.

We ran into a couple of mule deer who did not seem afraid of us.

Mule Deer In a Thicket

I kept smelling what I thought were either Javalina or maybe a skunk, but the aroma didn’t quite match either. It became incredibly clear what it was when we ran across this:

big foot print

The twig in the lower left is approximately 30 inches, so obviously whatever left the print was enormous. Also notice that it had six toes. While not the first to run across evidence of Bigfoot in Colorado, we felt extremely lucky to spot this, even if it is a mutant bigfoot with a vestigial sixth toe. This will surely increase the value of the carcass when he falls prey to one of the traps I set (baited with Big Macs).

I didn’t hit the snooze button this morning, I was up. We got somewhere between 6-10 inches of snow last night. I actually was looking forward to shoveling the walk and digging the car out.

A pot of coffee, Bugs Bunny on Netflix, the only thing missing to completely turn me into a twelve year old was a box of Fruit Loops. I’m sure if there are many more of these winter storms (especially on week days), it will wear very thin, but this morning it’s not a problem.

Why in god’s name do Real Estate Agents find it sooo difficult to keep the aspect ratio of a picture when putting it into MLS? And 10 pictures only on the consumer sites? Bah.

This really sucks, I tuned in earlier this week and got some right wing blowhard dumping in my ear. All is not lost, however, the crew moved online.

I’m hoping they will do the drop-by-indie-band recording a la Daytrotter as well as stream. There is simply way too much good stuff going unheard. They will have me all day during the week, while I’m in the car, however, it’s back to the pod. I’m still waiting for some Heartless Bastards to show in the playlist…

These things would include big thunderstorms and the tops of large cottonwood trees that fall on the roof of the house.

Just when you think it’s safe to go back in the water, three people have died on the Arkansas River in the last week. All were rafters, two at The Numbers and one at the rather innocuous Pinball rapid. It was joining the swim team at Rigor Mortis on Clear Creek that ended my run (and I was playing it safe, at that), but I was thinking of picking up a new boat and puttering around. Suddenly memories of bouncing off of boulders, bleeding profusely, and hanging on with the tips of my frozen fingers in snow melt waters are in the forefront of my mind. I actually paddled four more times after the Clear Creek incident, including two each on the rapids mentioned above, but all I could think about was catching that next eddy, or else.

I guess my paranoia about it isn’t completely gone, dropping sideways into a hole in a whitewater park has no appeal to me, and sneaking every route seems beside the point. I’ll have to ruminate a little further before I drop dime on some new gear.

P.S.

I never met the guy, but I really miss William (not Bill) Nealy.

Ha!

Went to the Cherry Creek Arts Fest and beat the meat of the storm back to the house by about a minute and a half. I did get a bit soaked, but it’s a duck-drowner out there right now.

My favorite at the festival?  Not sure, one thing is for sure, a lot of the stuff I did like cost more than every bike and bike part I’ve ever bought. I really liked some of the stuff Stephen Hayes, out of Ontario, had on display. I would have snapped some shots, but it was elbow to elbow.

I went down to the REI at Confluence today to pick up some odds and ends for the summer. Everything was going pretty well, I got my stuff and headed home.

I drove up Colfax and traffic was snarled. It took a few minutes before I saw why it was snarled. There was a woman lying in the street. She’d been hit by a car, a pickup truck, I think. Her bags were scattered all over the place and it didn’t look good at all. I pulled off on Emerson or Williams or one of those streets to get out and help. The ambulance showed up as I pulled over. None of my training covered auto accidents, and with much better help present, I moved on.

It’s been on my mind all day, I can’t shake the image of the scene. There is no mention of it on the local news sites so I’m not sure if she was OK or not. If you happen to know, email me at cjones at this URL minus the blog.

…and it’s bust. A winter storm warning is in place and even with my new super snow machine, I don’t think the drive will be anywhere near reasonable enough to make it to the other side of the mountains. No Mike the Headless Chicken or ‘Tater this weekend.

It’s probably a good thing, I am really, really tired.
